Background of the Study:

International environmental regimes, such as the Paris Agreement, are designed to address global climate change through coordinated efforts among nations. These regimes influence national policies by setting targets for greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, and encouraging sustainable practices. In Oyo State, the implementation of policies aligned with the Paris Agreement has the potential to transform local energy systems and drive environmental reforms (Okoro, 2023). This study examines how the Paris Agreement has shaped national policy in Oyo State, focusing on the integration of climate targets into economic planning, energy regulation, and environmental management. The research evaluates policy documents, implementation strategies, and performance metrics to determine the extent to which international environmental commitments translate into domestic reforms. It also explores challenges such as financial constraints, political resistance, and infrastructural deficits that may hinder policy implementation. By analyzing case studies and stakeholder perspectives, the study provides a comprehensive evaluation of how global environmental regimes influence national policies, offering insights into best practices and areas for improvement (Martinez, 2024).

Statement of the problem:

Although the Paris Agreement sets ambitious goals for climate action, Oyo State faces difficulties in aligning domestic policies with international standards. Challenges include inadequate funding, limited technological infrastructure, and resistance from established industries (Adeleke, 2023). This study aims to identify these obstacles and assess the effectiveness of environmental regimes in catalyzing national policy reforms, thereby addressing the gap between international commitments and local implementation.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the influence of the Paris Agreement on national environmental policies in Oyo State.

To identify challenges in implementing international environmental standards locally.

To propose strategies for enhancing policy alignment and effective implementation.

Research questions:

How has the Paris Agreement influenced environmental policy in Oyo State?

What are the main challenges in integrating international climate commitments into national policy?

How can implementation strategies be improved to ensure effective environmental governance?

Significance of the Study:

This study is significant as it examines the interplay between global environmental regimes and national policy-making. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, environmental advocates, and international organizations in aligning national strategies with global climate goals, ultimately contributing to sustainable development in Oyo State (Wilson, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms

International Environmental Regimes: Global agreements and protocols aimed at addressing environmental challenges.

Paris Agreement: An international treaty to combat climate change by limiting global temperature rise.
